Sustainability objectives are sometimes
viewed as difficult or contrary to the current interests of
business and the economy. In all sectors of the economy and
government, however, examples abound where sustainability objectives
have simultaneously led to economic, ecological and social benefits.
This project tries to document some of these examples.
The Case Studies listed on this page are largely
symbolic. They are intended to stimulate discussion on Sustainability
in Western Australia. The Case Studies provide a simple outline
of activities that are bringing Western Australia closer to
sustainability. They are not an assessment of the case study's
sustainability; to do this adequately would require more comprehensive
research to be carried out. They are however, case studies,
which have contributed to increased, ecological, social and
economic sustainability simultaneously. In this sense they should
be seen as contributing to our understanding of sustainability
in practice, the kinds of things it involves and ways in which
it could be improved or expanded upon. Where appropriate, additional
links are provided within case studies to facilitate interested
persons to find out further information.
Western Australian University students, engaged
in sustainability studies, have prepared the Case Studies. This
has provided an opportunity for cooperation between government
and higher education to achieve a common goal as part of the
University Partnerships for Sustainability
Program.
Please note that the Western Australian Government
is not responsible for the content or reliability of the Sustainability
Case Studies and does not necessarily endorse the views expressed
therein.
